Volunteers?

Postby [Bryan] on Sat Feb 16, 2008 9:19 pm

I am looking for interested parties whom are willing to work with me on the Starship Design Project.

If you are willing to go along with the stipulations that the fruits of your labor be released under a creative commons license, and are fine with your work being utilized in future projects by Vengeful or other interested parties, then I would say we an agree on a few things already. As a Volunteer, I can only ask of your time to create, and discuss articles regarding the project on the Vengeful wiki. There is no promise of pay or recompense at this time, however if there is a future use of our works that turns out to be profitable in any fashion, adequate share of said profits will be dispensed to all involved.

I am looking for individuals whom are passionate about starships and their inner workings, albeit such craft are purely a work of fiction, those whom can take this fictitious material and make it seem somewhat believable are perfect for this endeavor. This is a monumental task, one that cannot be taken on by any single individual, but collectively can be brought the level of fruition that it needs to be.

Please let me know if you are seriously interested in joining in on this task and we can discuss it further.

Thank you.

I don't know much about ships except I think they're pretty damned cool.

Thank you for your interest in the project.

Just to put a bit more information out there for other people and those already interested.

I'd first like to say that nobody really knows about starships since nobody has really built one before (at least not to my knowledge). So fear not that you may not know much about how starships are designed, no one really does, although there is plenty of theory and conjecture, some of it very much in-line with what we know about spacecraft, physics, etc... Yet when it comes down to it no one has constructed a working starship and ventured out into the galaxy.

Secondly this is meant to be a work of fiction, even if we intend to include realistic aspects of space travel and what we know about the physical universe, bending the rule to fit within our creation or to make something simply work (if explained away sufficiently) is quite acceptable. The main concept will be to enable creative endeavors not stifle them and constrain them so much that only a very narrow body of work could ever be completed within the framework given.

With that stated, to explain what The Starship Design project is to be like as it grows towards completion; think of it as a technical encyclopedia. Featuring articles including descriptions, technical diagrams, flowcharts, mathematical formulas, specifications, standards, and anything else that would be appropriate. One can kind of think of it as the Engineering 101 - 301 reference guides for the College of starship design.

Hopefully this will give anyone interested in the project a better perspective of what it is about.

So, should we discuss existing design in Sci-fi ships?
I've been watching quite a lot of Babylon 5. The Earth Alliance (EA) ships use a design based on O'Neill cylinder technology to create artificial gravity. The actual moving ships, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explorer_class_starship, of the EA can also form "jumpgates" to access "hyperspace".
The other races on the show use some other method to provide artificial gravity in their ships, rather than the spinning parts.
Here's the tech site for the show: http://b5tech.com/index.htm
Is this what we're aiming for? A cumulative wealth of information about our own ships and their design? Sweet.

Exactly, however we won't be referring to any specific series or established works of fiction although the technology we describe may touch upon the very same technologies and explain them in intensive detail, but what I hope to aim for is a generic system that could be taken and the parts be utilized to recreate any existing fictional universe (if that makes any sense).

For instance there may be many ways of building an engine to access and traverse the higher-dimensional space known as hyperspace, the differences would be in how such is achieved by any given vessel and the mechanisms involved. It can be said that both Star Wars and Babylon 5, jump through hyperspace, but by seemingly different means, albeit is still traversing upper dimensional space to connect to disjointed points in space/time in such a fashion to make an impossibly longer journey relatively short from some frame of reference.

The goal isn't to design our on starships, but to explain the process, theory, components, systems, of which they are comprised. From the type of metallic alloys that might be employed in ablative hull plating, to the makeup of the virtual substrate of the computational platforms operating environment.

Dude, this is my jam. I love to flesh out ideas and make them seem so realistic you wouldnt know if theyre fiction or not. Plus im very smart and know a lot about chemistry, physics, and space travel. Also, im very creative, so i will undoubtedly be an asset in creating new ideas.

Perhaps someday when I feel I am ready to come back to this project I'll seriously start working on it again, I just cannot imagine doing so right now. The more I've learned in the recent past just exacerbates the issue as to the scope of what would need to be done and more and more looks like literally years of work for a team of dedicated people to put together in any reasonable form. Sure there may be no time like the present to get things going but I don't have any reserve sanity or insanity in me to pursue these avenues just yet. :embd:
